Joining

To join the institution, complete the electronic form or print out the pdf form and mail to the secretary. Council will then review the application and, if appropriate, recommend for election at the next meeting.

Candidates for election as Companion need not be qualified engineers, but may be eligible because of their close association and interest in engineering or shipbuilding.

Applicants for membership, in any category except Student, should be proposed by a member (of any category other than Student) and seconder. These must be two members or Chartered Engineers.

Students need not be seconded.

Requirements for the various categories are set out in the standards page. However, there is no single criterion for membership in any category and each application is judged on its merits and in the light of the information provided, in confidence, by the applicant and the sponsors. In some cases applicants may be invited to discuss the matter at a meeting with the Membership Committee, which makes the final recommendation to the Council.
